Ken Crittle
Welcome to Ken Crittle's gallery. Here you will find something for everyone - and all executed with consummate
craftsmanship. Ken produces some of the work which others in the club would wish to emulate and aspire to.
Here is some of Ken's latest work - October 2018
Dummy Great Bustard Eggs
Various woods turned then decorated by a member of the Great Bustard group, who are reintroducing the bustard onto Salisbury Plain.

Goblet - the cup is made from a Mahonia root ball
The root was turned and hollowed inside and all voids filled - the voids were dusted with gold powder, and sealed with micro-crystalline wax. The stem is also turned in Mahonia. The base is turned from black m.d.f.

Approx.12" high in total, the root ball cup is approx. 4" diameter

Mulberry Natural Edge Vase
Oiled finish and renaissance wax.
Approx. 5" tall by 4" diameter at the top.

Sweet Chestnut Bowl
Made from a wind damaged branch broken from a tree in local woods. The burr was cut off and stored in dry shed for a year.
After turning - any voids were filled with 'Plastic Padding Leak Fix'.
The pewter rim was cast, then fixed to the bowl - and put back on the lathe for finish turning and blending in the pewter - which was decorated with a knurling tool.

The size is approx. 8" diameter by 3.5" tall

At the AWGB October 2018 Seminar held at Stone in Staffordshire, Ken entered three pieces into the instant gallery. The Mulberry Vase and the Sweet Chestnut Bowl were both chosen for the Top 50, traveling exhibition around the shows until the next seminar to be held in 2020.
Other well-known woodturners/ demonstrators (who have been to the Club) also entered pieces for the Show - to include:
Jason Breach, Dave Appleby, Keith Fenton, Bryan Milham, Paul Hannaby, Gary Rance, Les Thorne and Rod Page.
Ken is moving in very illustrious circles!

A Chinese Ball
This is something I have wanted to make for a long time.
A 65 mm diameter sphere in holly - 6 layers - on an African blackwood stand.
Turned on a homemade chuck with special cutters (also homemade)

Burr edge bowl in mulberry - thin walled, approx 100 mm
diameter

Now some "Drunken Boxes" as Ken calls them . . .
Now you wouldn't think Ken would be the type to be out making crop circles. Well he has been - in his workshop. You can't see much of the detail in the picture on the left so I've enlarged it a bit for you in the picture on the right. The timber Ken used was London Plane.

And a pewter-rimmed bowl. This has been patiently crafted from London Plane.

The following pieces are some of Ken's previous work.

Now how about some pendants to add the finishing touch to that glamorous outfit. Starting from the left, these are made from Lacewood, Padauk, African Blackwood (branch wood), African Blackwood again and Pau Amarello.
And last but certainly not least, here's some delicate, detailed work. Lace bobbins from numerous different species of timber. It's nice to be able to make things for fellow crafters from time to time.

Ken entered a nest of bowls into the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB)'s open gallery in 2007 and they were selected as one of the "Top 50" pieces which form part of the AWGB's touring exhibition. Congratulations Ken!
