Club Night Photos for 11th April 2018 - Guest Demonstrator - Gary Rance

The demonstrator for the April meeting was Gary Rance - whose subjects for the evening included a Humming Top, an Apple and a Circular Photo Frame.
Gary started the evening with a display of his mastery of the round skew (working on a pine blank) and showed the basic cuts, along with spindle gouge use.
The first item a Humming Top was made in Beech, in 2 pieces (glued together) for the top and a shaped handle with a cord to spin the top. The square hole in the top body was adjusted to get the hum 'in tune'…
Gary's second item was an Apple made in Laburnum on a screw chuck (in two settings), complete with a clove for the base (calyx) and a stained 'twig' for the stem in the top.
The third item was a Circular Picture Frame also mounted on a screw chuck to begin with and finished on a 4-jaw.
Finally, a static grinding wheel was shown to demonstrate how tools should be supported, moved and sharpened.
An excellent non-stop evening full of technique, hints, tips and observations…

The display table contained a fine mix of turned items.
There were examples of several hand threaded acorns and a chatterwork and stained threaded box, from Bill Savage. Kevin Taylor showed a Sycamore dish with a black 'Milliput' resin ring and Steve Body presented a small Hickory bowl with an inserted Padauk ring. There was a large bowl from Sean Snook in spalted Horse Chestnut and an ancient design needle case from John Sawyer. There were other very commendable items on the table but, the details were not recorded - ensure you see the photographer at the next meeting for a name check…
