Joe Kerrawn

Joe joins us with a range of pieces turned on his Nova lathe.

Here are a couple of examples of Joe's segmented work.  These platters were inspired by a quilting pattern book - made in Walnut, Sycamore and Laburnum.  Both items were entered in the AWGB Show in Loughborough in August 2013.  A picture of the platter on the LEFT was published in the Woodturning Magazine, Number 259, in November 2013.

Starting with a bowl blank - which is a good place to start since a "blank" is what most turners start their work off with . . .

. . . and this is what Joe made from the blank, or at least one which was pretty similar to the one pictured on the left.

Now for a couple of shots of a vase which Joe made. This one must have taken some hollowing out - it's about a foot high. And now for the surprise - it's made of plywood! Nice work, Joe. Thanks for sharing it with us.

And for those who prefer a more historical style, here's an amphora which Joe made from Yew, based on vessels from the ancient world.

And finally this one shows that not all bowl blanks are alike. This beech platter started out as a piece of laminated kitchen worktop - in fact it was the waste piece which was cut out to make a space for the sink. Joe was keen not to let that off-cut go "down the drain" (groan!!).
