Bob Sawyer (RIP) - Cremation Urn
Following the untimely passing of Bob Sawyer in July 2023 - the Club
was approached by Bob's family with a request to make a cremation urn to contain his ashes. Unfortunately,
shortly after Bob's death, his eldest daughter Nicola also passed. The Club was pleased to make a cremation
urn for her ashes as well. Bob's wife, Mari, chose the design for both urns. Bob was an active, popular and well-known Member of the Club since he joined in 2014. He was also a Committee Member with the role of Events Organiser and a regular instructor at organised Workshop Events. Club Chairman, Tim Mortimer volunteered to make both urns which are approximately 11" tall by 7.5" diameter at their widest point. Trying to find a large piece of suitable timber, the required size, was not an easy task, in fact it was pretty near to impossible. So the first urn, turned for Bob, was made of three pieces of sweet chestnut donated by a Club Member. The bottom two pieces were booked matched and all three glued together, a shallow groove was then cut and lines 'burnt' on the finished shape to disguise the joints. The second urn was turned from a piece of wood found in Bob's workshop that was thankfully large enough for the task in hand - species unknown, but it was very heavy. The general wall-thickness of both urns was around 10 mm, with the base at 25 mm. Each had a fitted lid made in black walnut and the overall finish applied was cellulose sanding sealer, followed by a coating of wax polish. Hollowing one urn in side grain and one in end grain did pose some challenges. The urns were completed and delivered in December 2023. The family were pleased with the results, and thought that Bob's urn was "unique and very Bob" (shown on the left in the photos below). |
