Club Night Report

Club Night Photos for Wednesday 14th September 2022 - Club Demonstrator - Tim Mortimer

The demonstrator for the September 2022 meeting was new Club Demonstrator Tim Mortimer's inaugural appearance.

Tim's presentation for the evening was a demonstration and discussion on the turning of hollow forms and some of the tooling he had made to help achieve this.

Tim started with a large walnut blank - about 8 inches diameter by 12 inches long, held in a 4-jaw chuck.  The outside diameter and tailstock end were trued - and a tenon formed using a home made ½" square carbide tip tool.  The part was reversed in the chuck and initial shaping of the outside form was carried out - the headstock end was relieved to provide space for the tools.
Tim showed his very simple, home-made inertia sander pads and handles along with his 'cutting tube' for punching out the abrasive discs.

The tailstock end was faced and a 1" diameter hole was drilled to depth.  The hollowing was started using some home-made boring bars with carbide tips - which were described in detail.  Interestingly, Tim showed hollowing on the 'wrong side' of the centre-line with the chuck running in reverse.  This works fine, provided you are able to lock the chuck on the spindle and have the correct handed tools - the result is that you are able to stand (almost) upright - not leaning over the lathe bed - it's so much easier on the back!

Tim had carried out extensive research on the various designs of hollowing rig, and then made his own 'articulated arm' system in plywood - with metal sleeves and bearings.  This was then improved by making it in metal, with better bearings.  A further development then took place to add a camera and the use of his (Android) tablet display to show precisely where the tool is, when it is deep inside the hollow form.
These were discussed and demonstrated.

Tim treated us to an excellent evening of hints and tips, simple and cheap home-made tooling, and an advanced hollowing rig with a camera, that cost less than £60 complete! It was interesting, entertaining, informative and inspiring .  Thank you Tim!

The following photos were supplied by Tim to show some of the tooling he has made.
