Club Night Photos for 12th September 2018 - Guest Demonstrator - Steve Heeley
The demonstrator for the September meeting was a welcome return of Steve Heeley (see website: www.steveheeley.co.uk) - whose subject for the evening was: A Decorative Wall Hanging
Steve's project for the evening was a double-sided wall hanging in Ash - turned, textured, air-brushed and carved, along with a decorative insert (timber - burr Elm).
The pre-prepared rectangular blank - with sanded edges, was drilled for a screw chuck - mounted and a chucking spigot cut in the rear face.
The part was re-mounted and the front face was turned. Spindle speed and out of balance vibration were all discussed. A piece of tape on the toolrest was a good safety tip to keep your hands safe!
A cove was turned in the face, sanded and textured with the Robert Sorby tool (ref. 330H)
Next, a 'V' groove was incised with a skew chisel - then an 'Arbortech Mini-Grinder Carver' tool (see Axminster Tools and Machinery Code No. 474341) was used to add more texture to the flat face.
The part was sprayed with black acrylic lacquer and a heat gun used to accelerate the drying. The central section was re-turned to remove overspray and the carved surface was sanded back to bare wood. The surface was then air-brushed with multiple (acrylic paint) colours (See Administer Tools and Machinery - SprayCraft SP30 - Code No. 504971). The front face was further enhanced with the application of 'vines' via a power carving tool.
The part was then reversed to enable the back face to be turned and textured. A decorative button insert was made to fit in the front face.
As usual, a superb demonstration of ingenuity, technique and skill to show an original item to the Club members. Thank you Steve.
