Club Night Photos for 9th March 2022 - Guest Demonstrator - Bryan Milham

This meeting was the first 'live' demonstration at the Club since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. The demonstrator for the March 2022 meeting was a welcome return by Bryan Milham - a long-standing regular who usually entertains us in January.

Tonight's demonstration was in response to a request for suitable subjects the Members would like to see. Hollowing and hollowing tools was the eventual choice.
Bryan began the evening with a comprehensive discussion of the various hollowing tools available, that he owned. He showed and described the use of the tools and how they cut the timber, from a range of manufacturers to include: Simon Hope, BCT, Woodcut, Rolly Munroe and Robert Sorby - along with a handful of his home-made tools.

The woodturning project was a "Rose Bowl" made in apple wood. The blank was a log, approx. 7" diameter by 7" long - initially held between centres - made round/ bark removed and a spigot cut for mounting in a 4-jaw chuck. Bryan proceeded to hollow the bowl using various hollowing tools to show the correct techniques for use. The 'foot' for the bowl was turned using a spindle gouge.

Various sanding methods were shown along with Bryan's 'home-made' tools, Velcro sanding pads and sanding sticks. There was a discussion of the use of the 'Golden Mean' - and how to make a "Phi - Golden Section - Fibonacci Gauge" - with dimensions supplied.

For the second part of his demonstration Bryan used the 'split turning' technique to make half-a-vase. He then showed the skew chisel technique for making 'turned flowers' into the end grain of very wet, hazel branches - these were sprayed different colours, parted off, drilled and mounted on bamboo skewers. Then, the surprise of the evening - with the application of a spot of hot-melt-glue (on the half-vase) - Bryan transformed a painting of flowers into a 3-D wall hanging, with his turned vase and flowers!

As usual, Bryan provided us with an excellent evening that was rich in techniques, entertaining, interesting and informative. Thank you Bryan!
