Club Night Photos for 14th March 2018 - Guest Demonstrator - Keith Fenton

The demonstrator for the March meeting was Keith Fenton - whose subject for the evening was Texturing and Colouring.
Keith started by turning a thick walled ash bowl and then proceeded to texture it with an Arbotech mini-carver. The 'whiskers' from the carving were removed with a blow-torch and sanded. This was followed by a coat of ebonising lacquer. The bowl was then sanded/ re-turned to leave only the black lacquer in the carved grooves.
An air-brush was used to apply different coloured spirit stain.

A pre-prepared wide rim/ shallow bowl (ebonised in black) was used to show the application of Jo Sonja's iridescent paint - initially with a gloved finger and then spread/ merged with just the air blast from the air-brush.
Finally, Keith showed the use of a power carver to cut delicate patterns into the rim of bowl. Multiple hints, tips and techniques were offered throughout the evening.

The display table contained a mix of turned items and work in progress. Examples of making your own candle cups from copper pipe and copper roofing nails was shown. Along with a square African blackwood cube/ box decorated on all sides via a rose engine. Other items included segmented work in progress and some completed items and a small coloured bowl.
