Club Night Photos for 12th June 2019 - Guest Demonstrator - Kevin Hutson

The demonstrator for the June meeting was a welcome return of Kevin Hutson (see website: www.khutson.co.uk).  Kevin demonstrated the making of a square edged lidded box complete with texturing and colouring and a square cornered shallow bowl.

The box was made of sycamore - with the base being turned first. This was standard turning - mount on a faceplate, shape the outside, turn a spigot - then hold on the spigot and hollow the inside.  The resulting base had a wall thickness of around 2.5 mm - all finished with the gouge.

The blank for the lid of the box was 1 inch thick and initially mounted on a faceplate - held in the 4-jaw chuck.  The underside of the lid was turned first - and fitted to the box base as a 'loose fit'.   A recess was added for the 4-jaw chuck.  The top surface of the lid was shaped.   A Dremel with a 3 mm diameter carbide, ball end burr was used to add a random pattern to the lid.  This was lightly sanded, sanding sealer applied and then stained black - with the lathe running (slowly).  A second colour (burgundy) was added to complete the box.

An ash blank 5.5 inches square by 1.5 inches thick was mounted on a faceplate - and the underside plus spigot was turned. The part was reversed and held on the spigot, so the inner surface of the bowl could be hollowed.

Kevin provided an excellent demonstration of superb tool control and technique.  He is a firm advocate of honing the cutting edge of his tools - which was used to good effect with very little sanding required.  Thank you Kevin!

The display table was well supported with a number of interesting items.

Mike Pearce showed a display of bird boxes in hawthorn - mounted on a 'garden wire' and holly structure, decorated with iridescent paint and lacquer. Steve Body presented a circular engagement ring box (in walnut) - with a swivel lid and magnetic closure. Dave Branscombe showed a 3-cornered bowl and a 4 cornered pot. Sean Snook showed a large ash bowl with an ebonising black lacquer on the underside. Richard Branscombe showed a small 3-cornered bowl complete with a custom home made 'mini' drive centre, along with a turned and carved lidded urn, with hand carved handles in sapele. Alan Cook showed a Singapore ball. To complete the display, Kevin Taylor presented an interesting inside-out turned candle with interior light in the base in oak.
