Club Night Photos for 10th July 2019 - Guest Demonstrator - Paul Hannaby

The demonstrator for the July meeting was a welcome return of Paul Hannaby (see websites: www.creative-woodturning.com and www.hannaby.com).  Paul demonstrated the making of a pewter rimmed bowl and a pewter threaded box.

An electric powered, adjustable, temperature controlled, melting pot was used for the casting process - and for added safety - heavy welding gloves and goggles were employed.

For the bowl - a yew blank approx. 3" diameter by 2" thick was mounted on a screw chuck.  The outside shape along with a mounting spigot was turned.

The mould for the pewter rim (use any close grained timber or MDF) was turned - and then carefully filled with the molten pewter - and left to cool.

The bowl was remounted and a .125" wide by .080" tall tenon was turned into the rim for keying the pewter rim.  The mould was re-mounted and the face turned flat along with a groove to match the raised tenon on the bowl.  The pewter rim was released from the mould by turning away some of the timber. Use epoxy resin (preferrable) or CA glue to attach the rim to the bowl.

Using a bowl he had turned earlier - Paul showed the machining and finishing of the bowl and the pewter rim.  Decoration using chatter tools, spiralling or knurling tools can be used as desired.

A pewter disk that might be set into the base of a bowl or box was shown - again this can be textured or patinated using antiquing fluids.

Finally, Paul showed the casting of components to make threaded inserts for a box.  After casting, fitting and machining, the threads would be cut by hand. The box was held via spigot jaws and a jam chuck.

Paul provided an interesting and innovative demonstration of excellent tool control and technique. The use of pewter and woodturning is a subject rarely seen or demonstrated - an inspiration to some of the Club members to try something new. Thank you Paul!

The display table showed a number of interesting items.

Dave Groves showed a thin shallow bowl with a square edge in sycamore.  Steve Body presented a burr edge bowl in elm.
An interesting 'decision making'/ Geneva mechanism (?) was shown by Bill Savage.  A nicely turned pepper mill was presented by Sean Snook - made from a non-descript table leg!  Vernon Hughes brought along his test piece, 3-cornered bowl in 'scrap wood'.
