Club Night Photos for 11th July 2018 - Guest Demonstrator - Kevin Hutson

The demonstrator for the July meeting was Kevin Hutson (see website:  www.khutson.co.uk) - whose subject for the evening was Square Edge Turning.

Kevin has been turning for over 40-years and as a professional for 25 of them. He has developed his own designs, methods and style for his forms and sells them chiefly via galleries.

This was a demonstration of turning a square edge lidded box in Beech.
The base of the box was turned first - held on a faceplate ring mounted in a 4-jaw chuck. Spindle speed is typically 1500 rpm. Kevin always hones his cutting tools as he believes it produces a better finish on the wood.
The outside shape of the box was finished - along with a spigot for chuck mounting to complete square edge rim and the inside of the box.

The lid was then turned - also mounted on a faceplate ring. The 'underside' of the lid was completed first with the spigot fit for the base of the box. A recess was cut adjacent to the spigot fit and was then used to hold the timber for completion of the upper face of the lid.

As a finish Kevin frequently uses liming wax and cellulose sanding sealer spray - typically 3-coats to achieve depth of finish.

An interesting and entertaining evening, showing excellent tool control and technique.  Thank you Kevin.

The display table contained one item from Bob Wells.
Bob had made his version of a bird box in wet Sycamore - similar to the one made by the June demonstrator, Robert Till
