Club Night Photos for Wednesday 8th January 2025
Unfortunately, the demonstrator scheduled for
this evening was unable to attend.
The Chairman, Tim Mortimer, activated his 'Plan B', and after
connecting his tablet to one of the large screen TV's, showed a woodturning
themed video. This was well received by the Membership and the evening was
declared a huge success!
The Display Table was well supported with some interesting
items on display...
Phil Lawrence placed a 'Name the Wood' label next to his small
bowl. After some discussion and wrong guesses Phil revealed the timber to be
Goncalo Alves - often known as Tigerwood. Phil also showed a large thin platter
made in oak. Paul Kohn presented a small lidded box made from
an old Victorian newel post - timber unknown, but very dry, with an oak base and
finial top - finished with oil. Paul also showed his first effort at piercing,
using a flat dish made in north American walnut. Martin Leadbetter
showed two inside out/ involuted turnings - four-segments, with finials - made
in oak. This was an excellent result considering that Martin only started
woodturning 4-months ago! Dave Branscombe placed three items on
the display table - a small, thin wall yew bowl, a cherry bowl turned down to
remove some signs of woodworm and a goblet shaped, combined candle and tea light
holder in cherry. Tim Mortimer presented two home-made inertia
sanders, complete with bearings and magnets. Frans Brown
displayed a tall box with a loose-fitting lid made from a monkey puzzle (aka Chilean
pine) knot. He also showed a monkey puzzle (seed) cone, which was about 8 inches
long. Martin Barrett showed a tall, thin-walled vase made in wet sycamore -
utilising a hollowing jig - which he had coloured. Bill Savage presented a
shallow dish he had used for experimenting with colour and spin painting - a
pleasing effect. Along with two small acorn-shaped, threaded boxes.
