Club Night Photos for 13th February 2019 - Guest Demonstrator - Mark Sanger

The demonstrator for the February meeting was a very welcome return of Mark Sanger (see website: www.marksanger.co.uk) - whose subject for the evening was: A Japanese-Inspired Lidded Vessel on a 3-Legged Stand.  This was based partly on Mark's article published in the June 2018 issue 319 of Woodturning Magazine.  In a very full evening Mark also made a bowl and a 'quick' basic box.

For the lidded vessel Mark started with a seasoned sycamore blank approx. 100 mm square by 150 mm long.  Using a bowl gouge the blank was rounded, the end was faced and a spigot cut for dovetail jaws.  Mounted in the chuck - the lid for the vessel was turned, textured and parted off.  The part was then hollowed and the outside shape cut with multiple coves and textured.  The base of the vessel was finished on a rubber faced friction plate supported by the tailstock.

The underside of the lid was completed via a jam chuck.  A knob for the lid was turned from a 25 mm square sycamore blank and stained black.
The 3-legged stand was also made in sycamore.  A simple disk was made first - with a slightly concave surface - and a jam chuck to complete the base of the disk.  The legs were made as a solid shaped ring - using an old German 'Hoop Turning' technique - which is then cut to reveal the shape of the legs to be fitted (glued) to the disk.  A very unusual and interesting technique.

A seasoned beech blank approx. 200 mm diameter by 75 mm thick was mounted on a screw chuck.  Mark then produced a masterclass in bowl turning techniques.

In the final 10-minutes of the evening Mark proceeded to make a basic/ simple lidded box (in beech) - very nicely turned, hollowed and decorated!

Mark produced a superb demonstration of practical advice, tool use, ingenuity, technique and skill to provide a stimulating and entertaining evening.  Thank you Mark!

The display table was well supported with a number of interesting items.

Bill Savage showed two triangular bowls and a marquetry disk.  A dish decorated with gold paint and pyrography was presented by Heather CrawshawPeter Smith brought along his first attempt (nicely done!) at segmented work in the form of a lidded pot.  David Branscombe showed a beaded pot and Richard Balmforth presented a tall multi-wood candle holder.
